While it is theoretically possible that some STIs could be passed from person-to-person via a public toilet seat, it is extremely unlikely that you will become infected in this manner.

But can you catch a sexually transmitted infection (STI), from a toilet seat?

No, you can't, according to sexual health expert, because even if the bacteria and viruses that can cause STI got onto the seat, they can't survive for long after leaving the human body.

What are Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)?

STI is an infection that is passed from one person to another person through sexual contact. As their name suggests, STIs are commonly spread through sexual activity, including intercourse, oral sex and, in the case of some diseases such as genital warts, direct skin-to-skin contact. 

A person can have STI without having noticeable symptoms of the disease. Some Sexually Transmitted Infections are known to be spread through non-sexual means such as via blood or blood products. Many STIs including syphilis, hepatitis B, HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhoea, herpes, and HPV can also be transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy and childbirth.

There are more than 30 different bacteria, viruses and parasites known to be transmitted through sexual contact. Eight of these pathogens are linked to the incidence of sexually transmitted disease. Of these 8 infections, 4 are currently curable: syphilis, gonorrhoea, chlamydia and trichomoniasis.

The other 4 are incurable viral infections: hepatitis B, herpes simplex virus (HSV or herpes), HIV, and human papillomavirus (HPV). Symptoms or disease due to the incurable viral infections can be reduced or modified through treatment.

Every type of STIs is spread differently. Bacterial STIs live in mucous membranes (membranes of the vagina, penis, rectum, and mouth) and are can only be transmitted through direct contact with these infected membranes.

Viruses may exist outside of mucous membranes (in the porous skin surrounding the genitals). But, in the case of hepatitis and HIV, these viruses do not readily pass through intact skin.

Finally, parasites are usually spread during sexual contact, but can also be spread through contact with an infected person’s clothing, bed linens, or towels.

The only type of Sexually Transmitted Infections that has a reasonable chance of being passed from person-to-person via a public toilet seat is a parasitic STI. The National Women’s Health Information Center states that, in addition to sexual contact, trichomoniasis can be picked up from contact with damp or moist objects, such as toilet seats, if the genital area is in contact with the damp object.

But toilet seats do not provide the ideal environment for parasites to live or reproduce. And to become infected, your genital area would have to come in contact with the parasite while it is still on the toilet seat.

In Conclusion

It is highly unlikely that you will become infected with a Sexually Transmitted Infection through contact with a toilet seat. Since bacterial STIs cannot survive outside the environment of mucous membranes in the body, it is impossible to contract one by sitting on public toilet seats. Viral causes of STIs cannot survive for long outside the human body either, so they generally die quickly on surfaces like toilet seats.

And in the case of HIV, any surviving virus on a toilet seat would be unable to reach your bloodstream unless you had an open wound that made direct contact with the virus on the toilet seat, a highly unlikely prospect. 

To contract an STI from a contaminated toilet seat, there must be a “distinct plot” The virus from an infected person would have to be deposited onto the toilet seat instantly before you sat on it, live, and be positioned in the exact place for transmission to take place.  Because this scenario is so unlikely, STIs cannot be transmitted via toilet seats. 

Though taking some precautions while using a public toilet isn't hard. If you use a public restroom, it is wise to wipe off the toilet seat and cover it with toilet paper before sitting down. Wash your hand in running water after use, and if possible, apply hand sanitizer. Remember, you cannot be overprotective!

The perpetrators of this violence do not necessarily have to be from a particular gender, race, age range, religion or sexual orientation, anyone can either be the victim or the perpetrator of domestic violence.

It can happen to a married couple, those living together, young/old who are casually dating. It also happens to people of all socioeconomic backgrounds and education levels. 

Note: Any action from another party, that physically harm you, arouse fear in you or prevent you from doing what you desire to do or force you do behave in a manner against your will should be considered as domestic violence. This can be in the form of emotional abuse, sexual abuse, threat and intimidations etc.

Although, you can't tell if a relationship would be abusive, because in most cases, it's always rosy and perfect at the beginning. Possessive and controlling behaviours don’t always develop overnight, but rather emerge and intensify as the relationship grows.

 Types of domestic violence

Physical Violence is the use of physical force against the other party in a way that ends up injuring the person or puts them in danger or risk of been injured. Examples include hitting, shoving, biting, restraining, shaking, choking, forcing drug/alcohol use, and assault with a weapon, etc. 

Sexual violence involves the violation of an individual’s bodily integrity. It's one of the commonest forms of domestic violence. It includes coercing sexual contact, rape, and prostitution. Sexual abuse also includes behaviour which limits reproductive rights, such as stopping the use of contractive methods or forcing abortion.

Many victims don't apprehend how broadly sexual abuse is defined. For example, if you've ever been constrained into not using contraception or having an abortion, then you may have been sexually abused. This form of abuse is known as reproductive coercion.

Psychological abuse is often portrayed as intimidation, threats of harm, and isolation. Examples include instilling fear in an intimate partner through threatening behaviour, such as damaging property or abusing pets, constant monitoring, or controlling what the victim does. 

Spiritual abuse may be seen as psychological abuse. It involves the misuse of spiritual or religious beliefs to manipulate or exert power and control over the other party.

Emotional abuse involves undermining an individual’s sense of self-worth. Examples of emotional abuse include blaming the victim for all problems in the relationship, regularly comparing the victim with others to undermine their self-esteem, emotional blackmail and suicidal threats of all sort. 

Economic abuse is devising all means to make the victim financially reliant on the abuser. It includes preventing or denying an intimate partner from work, education, controlling the financial resources, and withholding access to economic resources.

Warning Signs of Domestic Violence

Some of the signs of an abusive relationship include a partner who:

  • Stops you from seeing friends or family members
  • Demeans you to always put you down
  • Looks at you in a very scary way
  • Controls who you see, where you go, or what you do
  • Prevents you from making your own decisions
  • Destroys your property or threatens to hurt you
  • Intimidates you with harmful weapons
  • Pressures you to have sex when you don’t want to
  • Pressures you to take substances
  • Controls your time.
  • Beats you etc.

Stretch marks also known as striae distensae or striae gravidarum are scars that develop when the skin stretches or shrinks swiftly. The sudden change causes the collagen and elastin, which support our skin, to rupture. As the skin heals, stretch marks may appear. They may be red, purple, or silver in appearance and most often appear on the stomach, chest, hips, bottom, or thighs. It appears alike to changes seen in the surface of balloons that have been puffed.

There is some controversy over the precise mechanism by which stretch marks occur. There seems to be damage to the deeper layer of the skin accompanied by inflammation which eventually results in atrophic scar-like changes. Excessive physical stretching of the skin seems to induce these changes. 

Common causes of skin stretching include:

  • Puberty: Accelerated growth is typical in young people going through puberty. 
  • Rapid weight gain: Putting on a lot of weight in a short time can cause it
  • Prolonged use of corticosteroid creams and lotions can decrease levels of collagen in the skin. Collagen strengthens and supports the skin, and a reduced amount can increase the risk of stretch marks. 
  • Pregnancy: About 50%- 90% of women who are pregnant experience stretch marks during or after birth.
  • Certain medical conditions can cause stretch marks, conditions such as Marfan syndrome and Cushing’s syndrome. Marfan syndrome can lead to decreased elasticity in the skin tissue, and Cushing’s syndrome can lead the body to produce excess hormone that leads to accelerated weight gain and skin fragility.
  • Breast implants or extremely large breast.

There’s no way to prevent stretch marks completely, even if you continually use lotions and creams. However, keeping your weight in a healthy range by eating well and exercising regularly can help to prevent stretch marks caused by sudden weight gain or loss.

1. Control your body weight

One of the most helpful ways to prevent stretch marks, whether you’re pregnant or not is to maintain a healthy weight. It can happen when your skin stretches quickly due to fast weight gain. You may also notice stretch marks after rapid weight loss. Some people develop stretch marks during growth spurts, such as during puberty. While other people notice theirs after big gains from working out or using steroids. Working to control body changes from happening too quickly may be your best bet. Eat a healthy diet and exercise to help you manage your weight.

2. Stay hydrated

Drinking enough water may help keep your skin hydrated and soft. Soft skin hardly tends to develop stretch marks as much as dry skin does. The Institute of Medicine’s current recommendations for daily water intake is 104 ounces for men and 72 ounces for women. Drinking caffeinated beverages, like coffee, may increase your risk of developing stretch marks. If you must drink coffee, always balance out other fluid intakes with plenty of water and caffeine-free drinks

3. Eat a nutrient-rich diet

Stretch marks may also occur if you lack nutrition in certain areas. Eating foods that boost skin health may help. One way to make sure you’re getting a variety of nutrients is to choose unprocessed foods in various colours and taking fruits rich in Vitamins.

4. Include Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) in your diet

Collagen plays a role in keeping your skin strong and elastic. It helps reduce the presence of wrinkles, but it may also be important for preventing stretch marks. We have so many sources of Vitamin C, it can be found in citrus fruits, vegetables etc.

5. Soak up some vitamin D

Vitamin D may reduce your risk of stretch marks. The easiest way to get vitamin D is through exposure to the sun. The vitamin is also commonly added to bread, cereal, and dairy products like milk or yoghurt.

6. Eat foods rich in zinc

Zinc is an important nutrient for skin health. It helps reduce inflammation and plays a role in the wound healing process. There is very little evidence to date of a connection between zinc and stretch marks, but including zinc-rich foods in your diet, such as nuts and fish, may help keep your skin healthy.

7. Treat fresh stretch marks when it appears

You can’t prevent it on your skin, but you can work to minimize their appearance so they aren’t as noticeable in the long run. Make an appointment with your doctor or a dermatologist to discuss your options if you have fresh stretch marks. Your doctor can help determine what is causing your marks, and they may be able to suggest treatment options that work best.

They are also a great source of Vitamin C, B, and K, and contain choline, magnesium and potassium. Choline in Avocado is important for your baby’s brain and nerve development because the deficiency of choline may impact the baby’s memory.


  • Berries are tiny, tasty, and colourful fruits. They are a great source of antioxidants, and also contain lots of fibre and folate, which are great for both you and your baby. It’s advisable to eat mostly nutrient-dense complex carbohydrates like berries instead of processed, simple carbohydrates like doughnuts, cakes, and cookies etc. And unless you have gestational diabetes, carbohydrates should account for 50% of your pregnancy calories daily. Because carbohydrates supply the required energy and pass easily through your placenta to nourish your baby. Kindly note, when shopping for them, do make sure you buy organic varieties, which do not have pesticides.


  • Watermelon has it all, one of the fruits with a high amount of water. The sweetness and crunch are satisfying, watermelon contains potassium, zinc, and folate to battle your nighttime leg cramps and help with your baby’s spinal development. Magnesium helps muscles relax, which can prevent premature contractions during pregnancy. Include watermelon in your diet, especially in the last trimester, as it can fight morning sickness, reduce heartburn, and prevent dehydration.

Fruits to Avoid During Pregnancy

Some fruits have even been known to affect the health of the foetus, while others can lead to a miscarriage. Here is a list of fruits that you should not eat during pregnancy:

  1. Papaya: The latex content in unripe or semi-ripe papayas can lead to uterine contractions and early labour. Avoid them during pregnancy
  2. Black grapes: Avoid black grapes in the first trimester because they produce body-heat which could be harmful to the baby.
  3. Pineapples: Pineapples contain bromelain, which could soften the cervix and cause early labour.
  4. Dates: Dates excite the muscles of the uterus and generate body heat. Avoid these in excessive quantities.

The female child oftentimes receives different messages about her body; it is imperfect, too fat or too thin, too dark or too freckled. But for some girls, the message is that to be accepted by the wider community, their bodies must be cut, altered and even reshaped through a practice known as female genital mutilation (FGM).

The term “Female Genital Mutilation” is used by a wide range of women's health and human rights organizations. It sets a clear distinction from male circumcision. The use of the word “mutilation” also stresses the gravity of the act and buttresses that the practice is a violation of women's and girls’ basic human rights. 

''FGM refers to all procedures involving partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injuries to the female genital organs for cultural or other non-medical reasons''

FGM is recognized internationally as a violation of the human rights of the female child. It reveals deep-rooted imbalance between the sexes and establishes an extreme form of bias against women. 

It is nearly always carried out on minors predominately in sub-Saharan Africa and the Arab states. The practise violates a person's rights to health, security and physical integrity, the right to be free from torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, and the right to life when the procedure results in death.

It's estimated that over 200 million girls and women alive today have undergone FGM. At current rates, an additional estimated 68 million girls face being cut by 2030 in 25 countries where FGM is routinely practised (very alarming). 

This practice is mostly carried out by traditional circumcisers, who often play other central roles in communities, such as attending childbirths. In many settings, health care providers perform FGM due to the belief that the procedure is safer when medicalized.

Who is at risk of Female genital mutilation?

FGM is mostly carried out on young girls sometime between infancy and adolescence, and seldom on adult women. More than 3 million girls are estimated to be at risk for FGM annually.

Classifications of Female genital mutilation 

Type 1: Is the partial or total removal of the clitoral glans (the external and visible part of the clitoris, which is a sensitive part of the female genitals), and/or the prepuce/ clitoral hood (the fold of skin surrounding the clitoral glans).

Type 2: this is the partial or total removal of the clitoral glans and the labia minora (the inner folds of the vulva), with or without removal of the labia majora (the outer folds of skin of the vulva).

Type 3: Also known as infibulation, this is the narrowing of the vaginal opening through the creation of a covering seal. The seal is formed by cutting and repositioning the labia minora, or labia majora, sometimes through stitching, with or without removal of the clitoral prepuce/clitoral hood and glans (Type I FGM).

Type 4: This includes all other harmful procedures to the female genitalia for non-medical purposes, e.g. pricking, piercing, incising, scraping and cauterizing the genital area.

How does FGM affect the health of women and girls?

Consequences of FGM

Immediate consequences of FGM include severe pain and bleeding, shock, difficulty in passing urine, infections, injury to nearby genital tissue and sometimes death. The procedure can result in death through severe bleeding leading to haemorrhagic shock, neurogenic shock as a result of pain and trauma, and overwhelming infection and septicaemia. 

Almost all women who have undergone FGM experience pain and bleeding as a consequence of the procedure. The experience itself is traumatic as girls are held down during the procedure. Risk and complications increase with the type of FGM and are more critical and common with infibulations.

The pain inflicted by FGM does not stop with the initial procedure, but often continues as ongoing torture throughout a woman’s life. 

In addition to the severe pain during and in the weeks following the cutting, women who have undergone FGM experience various long-term physical, sexual and psychological effects. Women may experience chronic pain, chronic pelvic infections, development of cysts, abscesses and genital ulcers, excessive scar tissue formation, infection of the reproductive system, decreased sexual enjoyment and psychological consequences, such as post-traumatic stress disorder.

Complications may occur in all types of Female genital mutilation

Infibulation, or type III FGM, may cause complete vaginal obstruction resulting in the accumulation of menstrual flow in the vagina and uterus. 

Infibulation creates a physical barrier to sexual intercourse and childbirth. An infibulated woman, therefore, has to undergo gradual dilation of the vaginal opening before sexual intercourse can take place. 

Often, infibulated women are cut open on the first night of marriage (by the husband or a circumciser) to enable the husband to be intimate with his wife. At childbirth, many women also have to be cut again because the vaginal opening is too small to allow for the passage of a baby. Infibulation is also linked to menstrual and urination disorders, recurrent bladder and urinary tract infections, fistulae and infertility.

What are the consequences for childbirth?

A recent study found that, compared with women who had not been subjected to FGM, those who had undergone FGM faced a significantly higher risk of requiring a Caesarean section. 

Women who have undergone infibulation are more likely to suffer from prolonged and obstructed labour, sometimes resulting in foetal death and obstetric fistula. The infants of mothers who have undergone more extensive forms of FGM are at an increased risk of dying at birth.

Additionally, due to damage to the female sexual organs, sexual intercourse can result in the laceration of tissue, which greatly increases the risk of HIV transmission. 

WHO efforts to eliminate female genital mutilation focus on:

  1. strengthening the health sector response: developing and implementing guidelines, tools, training and policy to ensure that health care providers can provide medical care and counselling to girls and women living with FGM and communicate for prevention of the practice;
  2. building evidence: generating knowledge about the causes, consequences and costs of the practice, including why health care providers carry out the practice, how to abandon the practice, and how to care for those who have experienced FGM;
  3. Increasing advocacy: developing publications and advocacy tools for international, regional and local efforts to end FGM, including tools for policymakers and advocates to estimate the health burden of FGM and the potential public health benefits and cost savings of preventing FGM.

In conclusion, the key challenge is not only protecting girls who are currently at risk but also ensuring that those to be born in the future will be free from the dangers of the practice.

Most smokers started when they were teens. Those who have friends or parents who smoke are more likely to start smoking than those who don’t.
A lot of addictive smokers started smoking just because they want to try it out without minding the effect it has on their health. • Lower chance of healthy birth weight (more than 5.5 pounds).
• Less likely to have normal brain development before birth and through early childhood etc.
Note, the breast milk of smokers can carry nicotine to a suckling baby.

Smoking chronically deprives the skin of the necessary oxygen and nutrients needed. Smoking dehydrates the skin causing early wrinkling. Nicotine the active ingredient in tobacco smoke causes constriction of the blood vessels thus reducing blood supply to the skin. The skin loses its ability to rejuvenate and also becomes thin like parchment over time. Collagen tissue of the skin is also damaged by smoking; hence the skin loses its elasticity and early wrinkling sets in.

3. Sagging Arms and Breasts
Smoking doesn't only damage the appearance of your face; it can also take a toll on your figure. As skin loses its elasticity, parts that were once firm may begin to sag. This includes the inner arms and breasts. Researchers have identified smoking as a top cause of sagging breasts.
